Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel) is the coach of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline during season one, described by Murphy as “a type of Faye Dunaway of Network”. Within the season five premiere, a new McKinley cheerleader and “mean girl”, Bree, performed by Erinn Westbrook, is launched as a nemesis for the glee club. Sisters Tamara and Irina Press received 5 monitor and area Olympic gold medals for the Soviet Union and set 26 world records within the 1960s. Shelby is next seen in the nineteenth episode of season 4, “Sweet Dreams”; she is dwelling in New York, and visits Rachel at NYADA. Adler’s ultimate look is seen in a flashback by Will to the pilot episode within the series finale “Dreams Come True”. James Poniewozik of Time commented positively on Suzy’s characterization, observing that while she appeared to be a “throwaway dorky-woman stereotype”, she was “fleshed-out as a person”, a feat he doubted the series would have been able to earlier within the season. Within the season one finale, “Journey to Regionals”, Shelby adopts Quinn Fabray and Noah Puckerman’s newborn daughter, Beth. She campaigns with Puck for prom king and queen, although they both lose, and the two are still a pair at the tip of the second season. Some are also uncomfortable with male curiosity in lesbians.
